Overview
In May of 2009 my wife, Alice, and I moved to Culpeper, Virginia where I'm now employed by the Library of Congress as the Datacine Operator. This new facility for the Library is known as the Packard Campus for Audiovisual Conservation.
Built in 2007, this facility houses the collections of the Library's Motion Picture, Broadcast and Recorded Sound. We are also a production facility which includes a large film processing lab, the world's largest collection of nitrate film, and thousands of films and audio recordings.
My job involves working with the Public Service Office of the Library to make videotape or data file copies of films in the Library's collections. Basically, anyone can peruse the Library's collections on the loc.gov website, or on a link to youtube.com or flickr.com and then, after a copyright search, have a copy of a particular film made for themselves. Contact the Library through the website for the exact information.
Since moving to Culpeper my wife and I have joined a few local service organizations and act as volunteers at a couple of civil war preservation sites as well as the local History Museum.
Now that we're settled in I want to start working on building some personal histories for our friends and neighbors and expanding my own personal website to attract more people interested in preserving their family stories.
